Since she was a child she's always had a strong determination to be involved in sports. Gerina took up golf for the first time at age 15. Gerina finished her high school studies in Goddard High School. When she was a student in high school, she had won the New Mexico Golf State Tournament. In addition, she was a volleyball player at the level of state. She was enrolled at the University of Texas, Texas during the 2003 academic year. In her final year, she won every tournament she competed in. In her college career, she was named Conference USA individual champion player of the year, and was named UTEP Female Athlete Of The Year.
